Heed the Call
I was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. I grew up cradled by breathtaking vistas within the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by glorious nature. As beautiful as it was there, I was itching to explore the rest of the world, and I set out as soon as I was able to do just that. From the temples of Egypt to the ruins of Rome, I've seen and experienced a lot.
It wasn't until I first walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain that I felt something like a sense of home.
I first heard about the Camino de Santiago when I was a nerdy youngster hooked on PBS. I was watching a documentary about pilgrimage, and I became utterly transfixed by footage of the giant butafumeiro swinging in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. My little kid brain thought it was so cool! I promised myself I'd walk the Camino one day, then promptly forgot all about it until over 40 years later in 2014 when I was pondering new adventures. I couldn't remember what the pilgrimage was named, so I just Googled 'seashell pilgrimage', because I remembered the scallop concha was a symbol for it.
Long story short, about a year and a half later, I was there.
And it completely changed my life.
I've walked five Caminos in Spain and Portugal since 2016, three different routes.
I know I'll never stop walking them.
My goal now to help other pilgrims in any way I can.
What Route do you want to walk?
How many kilometers are you comfortable walking every day?
What should your stages be?
Where do you want to sleep at night?
Would you prefer private albergues, pensiones, hotels, or a bunk in a Municipal?
“I’ve known Susan for going on 15 years. Her love for all-things-Camino became apparent almost immediately. She thrives on researching and planning the routes of The Way. I’ve had the pleasure of joining her on two Camino’s to date; the Frances and the Primitivo. Each time, our adventure was flawlessly planned and executed. If you’re a novice pilgrim beginning the planning process, you need Susan in you corner.
Buen Camino!”
